Las Vegas Is More Than the Strip: Red Rock, Lake Mead, Mt. Charleston & More
Las Vegas is more than the Strip, and that matters if you're thinking about living here. Red Rock Canyon is about 17 miles west of the Strip (BLM). Lake Mead National Recreation Area covers about 1.5 million acres (NPS). Mt. Charleston's Spring Mountains rise to 11,918 feet (U.S. Forest Service). Locals use these places on weekends, and which one you want closest can help you pick a neighborhood.
Why it matters when you're choosing a home
- Red Rock Canyon is about 13 minutes from Downtown Summerlin
- Lake Mead and Lake Las Vegas are on the Henderson side of the valley
- Mt. Charleston is roughly an hour from the Strip and can be much cooler than the valley in summer
- The Arts District and downtown are about 9 minutes from the Strip
- Valley of Fire, Nevada's first state park, makes an easy day trip

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
Red Rock Canyon was Nevada's first National Conservation Area (BLM). It covers nearly 200,000 acres and gets more than 3 million visitors a year. The 13-mile, one-way Scenic Drive leads to trailheads, overlooks and climbing areas (BLM).
Local tip: From October 1 to May 31, you need a timed-entry reservation for the Scenic Drive between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Book it on Recreation.gov (BLM).
Where to live nearby: Summerlin. The Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center is about 13 minutes from Downtown Summerlin. See my Henderson vs. Summerlin guide, or the Rhodes Ranch guide for the southwest valley.
Lake Mead National Recreation Area
Lake Mead became the country's first national recreation area in 1964 (NPS). Its roughly 1.5 million acres of mountains, canyons and two reservoirs are used for boating, fishing, hiking, biking, camping and scenic drives (NPS). Hoover Dam is on the same trip.
Where to live nearby: Henderson. Boulder Beach is about 34 minutes from Henderson City Hall (OSRM, no traffic). Calico Ridge, Lake Las Vegas and parts of Green Valley put you on the east side of the valley. See Top 5 Neighborhoods in Henderson and Living in Green Valley.
Lake Las Vegas
Lake Las Vegas surrounds a 320-acre lake. Residents can paddleboard, kayak or rent electric boats, and The Village has restaurants and a grocery store. Reflection Bay Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus course (Lake Las Vegas).
Mt. Charleston and the Spring Mountains
The Spring Mountains National Recreation Area spans 317,000 acres. Elevations range from 3,000 feet in the valleys to 11,918 feet at the top of Charleston Peak. More than a million people visit each year to escape the summer heat and to ski in winter (U.S. Forest Service). Kyle Canyon and Lee Canyon have trails, picnic areas and campgrounds.
Local tip: Check road and weather conditions before you go, especially in winter. Bring layers, since it can be much colder up the mountain than in the valley.
Where to live nearby: the northwest valley and Summerlin are closest to the US 95 turnoff for the mountains.
Downtown and the Las Vegas Arts District
The Arts District (also called 18b) is just north of the Strip, about 9 minutes from Bellagio. It has galleries, vintage shops, bars, breweries and restaurants around Main Street and Charleston Boulevard (18b Las Vegas Arts District).
Note for 2026: the monthly First Friday festival is paused. Organizers told KTNV the pause will last at least through the end of 2026 while they reorganize the event (KTNV). Local shops have planned a separate Arts District Art Crawl for Friday, Nov. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. (8 News Now).
Nearby, the Springs Preserve has 180 acres of trails, gardens and hands-on exhibits (Springs Preserve).
High-rise living near it all
If you'd rather be close to the Strip and downtown, a high-rise condo can put you a short drive from both. On my Turnberry Towers tour, the terraces look out at the Strat and downtown. See my high-rise condo guide and my Turnberry Towers guide.
Day Trip: Valley of Fire State Park
Valley of Fire opened in 1934 as Nevada's first state park and got its legal designation from the Legislature in 1935. Today it covers more than 40,000 acres of red sandstone (Nevada State Parks). It's about 78 minutes from the Strip. Go early, and bring plenty of water in the warmer months.
Everyday Life Off the Strip
Most locals rarely go to the Strip. Here's what life looks like in the neighborhoods:
- Summerlin: Downtown Summerlin's shopping and dining, City National Arena (where the Vegas Golden Knights practice), and Las Vegas Ballpark, home of the Triple-A Aviators (Summerlin)
- Henderson: 77 city parks and more than 300 miles of trails (City of Henderson), plus The District at Green Valley Ranch and Lee's Family Forum, home of the Henderson Silver Knights
- New communities: see my guide to new construction in Henderson
